Term has ended, and Mrs. Shirley takes Joy to the seashore for her health, but since Jen's parents are away, she goes to stay with Joan. At the Abbey, they make two new acquaintances: young Vinny, whose family left for America ten years earlier, leaving her with an aunt who has since died; and Boniface Browning, the elderly former caretaker of the Abbey, on a visit. These, together with the cutting down of an ancient elm tree lead to new discoveries.
