On April 15, 1874, an art exhibit opened that featured some of the most beautiful, well-loved paintings in the world? Well loved today, that is. In 1874, the artists couldn’t even give their paintings away. A painting of a harbor scene at sunrise especially outraged one critic. Its title was Impression, Sunrise. Jokingly, he called this group of rebel artists Impressionists. It wasn’t meant to be a compliment. Today, the Impressionist artists are considered great masters of art, and their work is loved throughout the world. The colors, styles and images of the Impressionsists are especially appealing to children.
